What is Tae Kwon Do?
Many centuries ago in a place known today as Korea, a form of weaponless self-defense came into practice which had no name. It was used often by the natives for survival against wild animals.
Through the years, the practice developed into an art not only for use as self-defense, but also as a sport, a means of regular physical exercise, and a philosophy by which one could spiritually enrich his life.
Today, the art is known as Tae Kwon Do, the Korean martial art; the perfect system of self-defense. Literally translated, Tae means foot, Kwon means hand or fist, and Do denotes an art or way. Tae Kwon Do translates to the “art of kicking and punching”.
Tae Kwon Do is the Korean system of symmetrical body exercises designed for unarmed self-defense and counterattack. But perhaps more importantly, Tae Kwon Do is a state of mind. It is the art of discipline to develop control, coordination and balance as well as courtesy and kindness. Tae Kwon Do offers the excitement of competition, the blessing of good health through regular exercise and once mastered, remains a silent weapon with which one may defend their life if necessary, or the life of a helpless person. Tae Kwon Do is a way of life.Tae Kwon Do is unique in that it places heavy emphasis on kicking techniques - especially in Olympic free style sparring, but the art as a whole is much more complex and does not consist entirely of kicks.
